Swiss director DANIEL SCHMID has died following a battle with cancer. He was 64. The film-maker passed away on Saturday night (05AUG06) in his hometown of Flims, Switzerland, according to producer MARCEL HOEHN. Hoehn produced Schmid's acclaimed 1984 feature IL BACIO DI TOSCA (TOSCA'S KISS), about ageing opera singers in a retirement home who reminisce about their lives. During his career, Schmid also acted in numerous movies including Wim Wenders' 1977 classic DER AMERIKANISCHE FREUND (The American Friend). In 1999, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. Bosses at this year's (06) event plan to screen Il Bacio Di Tosca in tribute to Schmid on Sunday (13AUG06).
