Beloved Indian Dancer/choreographer Mrinalini Sarabhai Has Died At The Age Of 97.
Mrinalini, who worked on more than 300 dance dramas in her lengthy career, passed away on Thursday (21Jan16) after she was admitted to a hospital in Ahmedabad, India suffering from an infection.
The respected tutor helped train thousands of students in classical forms of Indian dance, and she was also noted for founding the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts with her husband Vikram in 1949.
Mrinalini, who briefly studied at New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts, won numerous awards during her illustrious career, including the Indian national civilian honours Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, and she also received the Diploma of the French Archives Internationales de la Danse and a gold medal from the Mexican Government for her choreography of the Ballet Folklorico of Mexico.
In addition to her dance career, she also penned novels, poems, and stories for children.
Mrinalini had a son, Kartikeya, and a daughter, Mallika.
Her death was announced on Facebook.com by Mallika, who wrote, "My mother Mrinalini Sarabhai has just left for her eternal dance."
