The site of California's Coachella Festival is at threat from a massive earthquake which is already 300 years overdue, according to scientists.
At a public safety meeting in Rancho Mirage on Thursday (09Aug07), leading seismologist Lucy Jones told locals an expected shaker could level the California desert area which attracts hundreds of thousands of music fans every spring.
Her warning came hours after Chatsworth, California was hit by an earthquake, which measured 4.5 on the Richter Scale.
Jones said the Coachella Valley earthquake could be the most devastating in America's history.
She explained, "There will be several thousand dead and billions of dollars in damage."
Jones guessed the long-overdue quake, which would bring buildings down as far away as Los Angeles, could measure 7.8 on the Richter Scale.
