Demonstrating the growing importance of the Chinese box office to Hollywood, China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television has reported that during the first nine months of this year, total ticket sales rose to $1.14 billion, with James Cameron's Avatar accounting for $207 million of that figure. The disaster epic Aftershock was in second place with $100 million. The Xinhua news agency quoted Tong Gang, director of the state-run film bureau, as predicting that the total take for the year will come to about $1.4 billion. Last week the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television predicted that box office revenue will exceed $4.5 billion by 2015.
The actor plays the titular hero in the forthcoming adaptation.
