Celebrated Russian cellist Alexander Ivashkin has died aged 65.

The musician/conductor passed away on 31 January (14) in his adopted hometown of London following a battle with cancer.

Throughout his career as a cellist, Ivashkin performed with orchestras all over the world, and he was also a noted solo star and a prolific recording artist, playing on more than 40 releases over the years.

Ivashkin also published more than 20 books on music, directed music festivals and conducted orchestras in countries including Britain, Australia and New Zealand.
