The rapid rise in internet users has forced the British music industry to dramatically alter the UK charts - to incorporate the quantity of downloadble tunes being purchased.
The increasing number of music fans buying the latest singles and albums online has awakened industry bosses to the fact internet sales need to be included in the weekend charts, to give an accurate account of which artists shift the most overall units.
Experts predict internet downloads will overtake record shop sales within the next few years.
An industry insider says, "The powers that be have got everything crossed hoping this rethink will halt the decline of singles sales. They're not sure how it's going to pan out, so they have deliberately made sure the week leading up to the chart is a quiet week."
The new chart will be launched on 17 April (05).14/03/2005 14:09
