Smythe, who founded the 1960s pop group fronted by Alex Chilton, passed away on Wednesday (06Jul16).

The group enjoyed a handful of hits, including The Letter and Neon Rainbow, before Smythe quit in 1967.

The band went on have have more hits before splitting in 1972.

The drummer went on the study art and became a freelance illustrator.

He reunited with the original Box Tops lineup in 1996 and the band toured until Chilton's death in 2010.

Smythe becomes the fourth Memphis, Tennessee music legend to die in as many weeks, following the passings of Memphis Horns star Wayne Jackson, soul songwriter MACk Rice, and Elvis Presley's original guitarist Scotty Moore.
