Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt has been ordered back to prison for his connection to the 1993 terrorist bombings in India.

The actor was sentenced to six years behind bars in 2007 for purchasing weapons from bombers who attacked Mumbai with a series of blasts, claiming 257 lives and wounding 713 others.

Dutt spent 18 months in jail before appealing against his punishment in 2007. He was released on bail while he fought the case.

On Thursday (21Mar13), judges at India's Supreme Court reduced his term to five years and ordered Dutt to surrender to authorities in four weeks' time.

Dutt, who alleged he needed the weapons to defend his family during widespread riots in 1993, was convicted of holding illegal arms in the run-up to the explosions across Mumbai.

The attacks are believed to have been organised by bosses of an underworld crime syndicate. Dutt claimed to have no knowledge of the plot at the time he purchased the guns.
