Veteran Bollywood actor-turned-politician SUNIL DUTT has died in Bombay, India. He was 75.

Dutt passed away of a heart attack today (25MAY05) after having been ill for some time.

India has now declared a day of mourning in his honour.

Dutt, a prolific screen star, appeared in over 100 films, but it was his role in the OSCAR-winning 1956 movie MOTHER INDIA which catapulted him to stardom.

The much-loved performer also joined India's Congress-led government in 1984 as minister of sport and was famed for his tireless work against poverty in Bombay.

Dutt is survived by his son SUNJAY, who has succeeded his father as one of Bollywood's most successful actors.
