Bollywood actress MONICA BEDI has been sentenced to five years in jail by an Indian court for passport forgery and criminal conspiracy. Bedi was extradited from Portugal last November (05) with Mumbai (Bombay) underworld criminal ABU SALEM. Salem is accused of involvement in the Mumbai bomb blasts in 1993 where 257 people were killed and is currently being held in a high-security jail awaiting trial over the attacks. He is believed to have close links with DAWOOD IBRAHIM, the Muslim underworld figure accused of masterminding the terror blasts. The Bollywood star was tried on lesser charges of fraud and criminal conspiracy, and left the court in Hyderabad (southern India) looking grim under the guard of policewomen. Bedi's lawyer, PRADEEP KUMAR, says, "We are disappointed. The court has taken a stern view." Kumar is planning to appeal for a reduced sentence. The high-profile case also saw the sentencing of three others, including a police inspector and a postman, to a total of five years imprisonment for assisting Bedi in getting a passport using false information.
