Bluegrass fiddler ART STAMPER died on Sunday (23JAN05) at a hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, where he was being treated for complications from throat cancer.

The 71-year-old musician worked with the likes of BILL MONROE, the GOINS BROTHERS and the STANLEY BROTHERS during his lengthy career, but he initially trained as a cosmetologist.

Stamper turned his back on fiddling for 20 years so he could run his own hair salon in Louisville.

The Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America awarded him its best old-time fiddler award for three consecutive years.
