The owner of a silent movie theatre in Los Angeles has been forced to axe plans to screen controversial 1915 American Civil War epic BIRTH OF A NATION, after receiving death threats.
CHARLIE LUSTMAN, who owns the Silent Movie Theatre, pulled the plug on the screening on Saturday (07AUG04) after he was inundated with phone calls and letters from people violently opposed to the DW GRIFFITH film.
The film is rarely screened because of its politically incorrect depictions of blacks and glorification of the Ku Klux Klan.
Lustman attempted to show the film four years ago (00), but was advised to dismiss his plans by America's National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
The theatre owner says, "I apologise to everyone on all sides - to those moviegoers who wanted to see this in the right context and to those who were offended."11/08/2004 21:29
