Animated Disney movie Big Hero 6 has shot down American Sniper at the U.K. box office by claiming the number one spot on its opening weekend (30Jan-01Feb15).

The superhero film topped the charts in the U.S. on its release in November (14) and producers are now celebrating a double victory after repeating the feat in Britain.

The film took $6.9 million (£4.3 million) in box office receipts over the weekend, narrowly outselling another new release, Kingsman: The Secret Service, which took $6.7 million (£4.2 million) to land second spot.

The previous weekend's (23-25Jan15) chart-topper American Sniper sunk to third place, with ticket sales of $2.4 million (£1.5 million), and the top five was rounded out by The Theory of Everything, with $1.6 million (£1 million), and Taken 3, with $1.3 million (£800,000).
