The former singer of The Cult believes Morrison's untimely death in 1971 could have been avoided if he'd been a stronger character who hadn't been so affected by the way the media deemed his spiritual interests to be a form of pretension.
And as a result, Astbury can't understand why so many obsessed rock fans try to emulate the wild antics of their idols.
He says, "He (Morrison) was an easy target. Even back in the day. And that's the saddest thing in a lot of ways - and maybe he wasn't strong enough, and misadventure led to his demise.
"He's definitely the classic self-destructive rock personality. And I'm still seeing that now. For some reason that archetype holds such value for young men - they want to destroy themselves. They want to throw themselves on the rocks. Why is that?"
