The Mildred Pierce star passed away of natural causes at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on 12 May (15), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Compton first appeared on Broadway in 1945 in the comedy The Ryan Girl.

He then headed to Hollywood, where he booked roles in TV shows Gunsmoke, Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The D.A.'s Man and films The Ten Commandments and The Glass Menagerie.

In the 1960s, Compton left acting to pursue a career as a real estate developer in California.
