British actor Jack P. Shepherd is facing a reprimand from Tv bosses over a series of controversial tweets that sparked a public backlash.

The 26-year-old star, who appears in U.K. soap opera Coronation Street, hit headlines this week (beg14Sep14) after he made a joke online about a recent fire at an animal shelter in Manchester, England which killed 60 dogs.

Shepherd's "hot dogs" gag sparked fury and was branded "shocking and cruel" by fans.

The star has now issued an apology, calling his tweets "insensitive" and promising to make a donation to the dog home. Bosses at Coronation Street have also vowed to reprimand him over his behaviour.

A show spokesman tells Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper, "Jack's ill-judged and insensitive tweets were clearly unacceptable and we will be talking to him about his conduct."
