Rapper Nelly headed home to Missouri to lead a rally in the troubled town of Ferguson on Monday (18Aug14) amid growing unrest following the police shooting of an unarmed teenager.
Hundreds of protesters have clashed with riot police in recent days following the death of Michael Brown and officials have been criticised for using heavy-handed tactics in a bid to break up the crowds.
Nelly, who grew up in nearby St. Louis, has been speaking publicly about the troubles there since the shooting, and he braved the violence by travelling to Ferguson on Monday (18Aug14).
The Hot in Herre star led a rally in the town and gave a speech to locals, urging them to protest peacefully and keep the real reason for the demonstrations in mind.
Speaking through a megaphone, he told the gathering, "It's a chain reaction, man... we don't want to deal with the reality we just want to be so mad that we got our own personal agenda. It's about the Brown family. It ain't about your family right now... You can't overreact. I would rather over-think than overreact because once you overreact, you can't take it back."
Video footage from the day also shows Nelly responding to questions and statements from angry locals, and talking to them as he walked through the crowd.
Brown, 18, who was a suspect in a robbery, was shot dead by a police officer in Ferguson earlier this month (Aug14) as he attempted to surrender.
