Legendary playwright and scriptwriter Neil Simon admits that he only wrote a sequel to classic comedy THE ODD COUPLE so that he wouldn't lose the copyright.

Neil wrote the screenplay for 1998's ODD COUPLE II - that starred the late actors Walter Matthau and JACK LEMMON - because otherwise he would have lost the exclusive rights to the characters.

Neil says, "If only for one reason - it was that the copyright was going to lapse in 10 years. And then I would see nothing after that.

"And so I thought I'd take those two characters and try to write an extension of what was there. So at least I could still be part-owner of The Odd Couple. But it didn't work out too well. It was very hard to top the original."
