NBC is preparing to oust Jim Bell as the executive producer of the Today show and replace him with Alexandra Wallace, a veteran news exec who currently produces the primetime newsmagazine Rock Center with Brian Williams, The New York Times reported today (Tuesday), citing people at the network who described the plan on condition of anonymity because it had not been announced. The shuffle is reportedly being prompted by the falling ratings of the flagship morning show, which had reined for 16 consecutive years as the No. 1 show in its time period but which has now been replaced in that position by ABC's Good Morning America. Ratings For Today have been falling for months but plummeted when Ann Curry was removed from the show earlier this year and was replaced by Savannah Guthrie. Bell has taken responsibility for that decision although numerous TV columnists have blamed Today cohost, Matt Lauer. Curry is now head of a special reporting unit that contributes reports to Today and Rock Center. The Times observed that Wallace is the executive in charge of that unit, immediately triggering speculation that Curry may be restored to her old job.
