In the nightly news race, NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams edged ahead of ABC's World News With Charles Gibson during the November sweeps month, with the NBC program averaging 9.2 million viewers and the ABC program 9.1 million. However, ABC pointed out that the Gibson newscast did not air on Thanksgiving due to a football telecast and if that night had been taken out of the equation, it would have won the month by about 20,000 viewers. More importantly, analysts noted, the ABC newscast is up by more than 200,000 viewers over November a year ago, while NBC's is down by more than 300,000. CBS Evening News With Katie Couric is down by more than a million viewers. Asked about Couric's performance, CBS chief Les Moonves acknowledged that some of the newscast's older viewers had "flipped over to Charlie Gibson. ... That's not a demographic we want." Later, he said of Couric, "I still believe in her. Hardest worker in town."
