Naomi Watts gives an impressive performance in the upcoming biopic 'Diana'.

The Oscar-nominated actress - who bares a striking resemblance to the late Princess Diana - appears to offer a compelling take on the tragic story of the late icon in the recent trailer which is generating a buzz online.

The two years prior to Diana's death in a car crash in Paris in August 1997 will be revealed in the Olivier Hirschbiegel-directed movie.

The biopic documents her campaign against land mines and her relationships with surgeon Hasnat Khan and Dodi Fayed - who died in the car crash with her.

However, Naomi claims the film doesn't aim at sensationalizing the iconic British star.

She told USA Today: ''I was nervous going into it and tried my best to say no a couple of times... I guess I wanted to do it for all the reasons I was against it - the idea of doing this transformation and telling the story of someone who's wildly famous, albeit doing it in a sensitive way.

''She's a fascinating woman with a fascinating story that obviously ended in such tragedy ''

The 44-year-old actress was intent on showing a different side to the icon.

She continued: ''It's hard to discern the truth about this woman. There's so much information available. It becomes very confusing.

''I had to trust the story. There are facts that the story has been built around.''

Speaking about Vanity Fair's decision to put Diana on the cover of their September issue, she said: ''I think she just encompassed so many things in a woman. She's like Marilyn Monroe.

''She wasn't overtly sexual like that but she had this wonderful warmth and charisma and vulnerability. She had strength and beauty and grace,''
