Three-piece rock outfit Muse picked up best band at the suitably rock and roll NME awards ceremony last night.

For Muse, the award will cap an amazing year which has seen them complete a sell-out arena tour and massive album sales.

Sheffield rockers the Artic Monkeys went home with two awards, the only act to do so, with best album for Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not and best track for Scummy Man.

Best new band was named as the day-glo "neu-rave" rockers the Klaxons while newcomer Jamie T was given the award for best solo artist.

Aside from the awards, the ceremony also saw a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker and the lead singer of hot new band the Gossip.

Performing at the Hammersmith Palais, the pair wowed the crowd with a rendition of Heaven 17's 1983 hit Temptation. Winners The Killers, The View and Leeds-based Kaiser Chiefs also performed for the celebrity crowd.

Primal Scream also treated the crowd, which included Pete Doherty and supermodel girlfriend Kate Moss, to a cover of The Clash's White Man In Hammersmith Palais with the Clash legend Mick Jones.
