Eighties pop star Rick Astley is an unlikely nominee for the best act ever at the MTV Europe Music awards.
The Never Gonna Give You Up star is up against Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day, Tokio Hotel and U2 for the historic prize, the winner of which will be announced on November 6th.
Despite Astley's biggest hit topping the charts around the world more than 20 years ago, fans have selected him as one of the six nominees for the best act ever award, with more established artists such as the Beatles and Madonna missing out.
It is believed his surprise nomination by have come about as a result of an internet movement known as 'Rickrolling' which earlier this year saw internet users unwittingly following hyperlinks to the video for Never Gonna Give You Up.
And producer Richard Gregory said Astley's awards nod showed "MTV has been well and truly 'Rickrolled'".
"This surprise nomination truly demonstrates that the MTV Europe Music Awards is the most democratically selected awards show there is," he added.
"Rick's fans have obviously decided that he deserves recognition as a pop icon and No Doubt they are determined to make sure he wins on the night."
