Chelsea Handler thinks the MTV Video Music Awards are the perfect fit for her personality.

The comedienne - who fronts talk show 'Chelsea Lately' - is set to follow in the footsteps of Jack Black, Chris Rock and Russell Brand in hosting the US awards show, one of the largest in the calendar.

Speaking to The New York Times newspaper, Chelsea said: "If there's one awards show that I should be hosting, it's probably this one. My personality probably wouldn't gel with the Emmys or the Golden Globes."

Chelsea is looking forward to hosting the "relaxed" awards, but is convinced the celebrity guests won't know who she is.

She said: "It's a relaxed show, so people aren't as uptight. It's not the Grammys; it's not as serious as that. It's an MTV audience, so I'm sure some people won't know who I am. But by the end of the show, I won't know who anybody is, just like I don't now."

Stephen Friedman, the general manager of MTV, explained that although Chelsea was "an unexpected choice," he was confident she was the right person for the gig.

He said: "You look at her following from our audience, and it makes sense. They're passionate fans."
