The hip-hop star, also known as Yasiin Bey, was detained in South Africa on Thursday (14Jan16) amid allegations he was attempting to depart from Cape Town International Airport using an invalid passport.

The 42-year-old maintains he was told the World Passport he was using was valid, but authorities insist the document isn't legal.

Earlier today (20Jan16), Kanye West released a statement on behalf of Bey, in which the rapper/actor declared he is "being prevented from leaving unjustly, unlawfully, and without any logical reason", adding, "I have reason to believe or suspect that there are political motivations behind the way that I'm being treated because... I haven't broken any law and I'm being treated like a criminal."

He has since been released on $300 (GBP200) bail and ordered to report to police every two days until his next court date on 8 March (16).

Authorities also accuse the rapper of trying to keep his family in the country on an expired visa since 2014 and they have ordered them to leave by 29 January (16), according to TMZ.com.
