Actor Morgan Freeman has poked fun at persistent online rumours suggesting he has died, assuring fans he is alive and well.

The Shawshank Redemption star was targeted in a sick death hoax over the weekend (20-21Oct12) as "RIP Morgan Freeman" quickly became a trending topic on Twitter.com.

It was the latest in a string of false death reports aimed at the actor, but Freeman saw the funny side and took to his Facebook.com page to set the record straight.

He writes, "Like Mark Twain, I keep reading that I have died. I hope those stories are not true... But if they are, I'm happy to report that my afterlife seems identical to my life when I was alive.

"I did go to Las Vegas to begin work on the film Last Vegas. That is anything but a death sentence - Morgan."

Freeman also posted a photo of himself smiling to prove he is alive and well.
