Arkansas child service authorities have proposed handing custody of Mindy McCready's two boys to her mother and stepfather following the country singer's tragic death on Sunday (17Feb13).

The deeply troubled star's sons Zander, six, and Zayne, 10 months, were taken into state care earlier this month (Feb13) after relatives raised concerns about MCCready's ability to look after the kids as she struggled to come to terms with the apparent suicide of her producer boyfriend David Wilson - her youngest child's dad - in January (13).

Her body was found at her Arkansas home on Sunday, on the same porch where Wilson died, and police are also investigating her death as a suicide.

Zander's father, MCCready's ex-boyfriend Billy MCKnight, expressed his desire to be reunited with his son on Monday (18Feb13), revealing he wanted to regain legal custody of his kid in light of the tragedy, but it appears state officials are keen to keep the boys together - and they have suggested the star's mum, Gayle, and her husband Michael Inge are the ideal guardians.

In legal papers sent to Circuit Judge Lee Harrod, officials at the Department of Human Services proposed the Inges may be a better fit for the kids, because they have a "substantial relationship" with their eldest grandchild.

Gayle was previously given custody of Zander in 2007 when her troubled daughter was jailed following a probation violation. She also fought to keep the child as MCCready battled various substance abuse issues.

A custody hearing has been set for 5 April (13).
