Revered moviemaker Milos Forman will be honoured with the Directors Guild of America's prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.

Dga president Taylor Hackford announced the Oscar-winning director of film classics like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus will be the recipient of the accolade at the 65th annual Dga Awards in February (13) at a press conference on Wednesday (28Nov12).

Hackford said, "It is a tremendous privilege to present the Dga for feature film to one of the greatest filmmakers of our time.

"No matter what subject or genre he tackles, Milos finds the universality of the human experience in every story, allowing us - his rapt audience - to recognise ourselves within the struggle for free expression and self-determination that Milos so aptly portrays on the silver screen."

Forman becomes the 34th recipient of the prize - Norman Jewison was last honoured in 2010.
