Midlake formed in the small, quirky town of Denton, Texas. These five gifted and diligent musicians spent their late teens and early 20s forging their singular musical vision and soon enough they were discovered by Simon Raymonde, head of Bella Union Records, who fell deeply in love with the band and their dazzling music.
"Young Bride" is the first single (released May 29th) to be lifted from Midlake's stunning second album, the mysteriously-titled "The Trials of Van Occupanther", released in June 2006. Although they never sound anything but contemporary, Midlake's second album takes much of its musical inspiration from the 70s. After they'd recorded their debut, which drew comparisons with bands such as Radiohead, Mercury Rev, Grandaddy and the Flaming Lips, singer/songwriter Tim Smith found himself listening to artists such as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac and America. He found that it was these artists that moved him the most, and it was these influences that were to find their way into the incredible new music that he was to compose.
Over the past two years, Midlake's intriguing musical vision has seen them rapidly gaining a devoted fanbase. Interestingly, one of their biggest supporters is Jason Lee, star of Almost Famous and My Name is Earl. Midlake are his favourite band, and he has of late been on a mission to take their music to a global audience.
Other new fans of Midlake are The Flaming Lips who have just invited the band to support them on their European tour.
