Former Lost actress Michelle Rodriguez has been sentenced to six months in jail after violating probation arising from a series of traffic offences.

The 29-year-old - who has also appeared in Resident Evil and The Fast And The Furious - is to report to jail on Christmas Eve after repeatedly contravening the terms of her probation.

The actress had been charged with three driving offences in 2004, including hit-and-run and drink driving, and was sentenced to two days in prison, as well as community service and a three-year probation period.

The probation was violated when she was charged with drink-driving in Hawaii in 2005, though her 60-day jail sentence lasted less than 24 hours, due to prison overcrowding.

Rodriguez, who played Ana-Lucia in JJ Abrams' TV drama Lost, failed to comply with her probation requirement of completing 30 days of community service, and undergoing alcohol rehabilitation treatment.

Los Angeles city attorney spokesman confirmed the actress' sentencing, saying she "admitted violation of her probation by failing to provide proof of community service and by consuming alcohol three times while wearing an alcohol monitoring device".

He added: "She did file a document that said she completed community service on September 25th, but we obtained evidence that she was in New York that day."

A statement on her website simply said: "Yes, it's true. But Michelle is Michelle, so no worries. Check back."

She is due to begin filming Avatar, the new James Cameron movie, later this month.
