French director Michel Gondry has been signed to bring the tale of masked superhero The Green Hornet to the screen, it has been announced.

Based on the 30s radio serial and 60s TV show, the film tells of the titular millionaire Playboy who fights crime by night with his sidekick Kato.

Knocked Up star Seth Rogen has recently lost around 30 pounds and embarked on a punishing exercise routine to play the Green Hornet but the film was in danger of being scrapped afer Stephen Chow - who is still attached to play Kato - pulled out of directing the action adventure.

But after Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind director Gondry put together a visual presentation for Sony executives, he has been signed to direct The Green Hornet in line for a June 25th, 2010 release.

Renowned for his singular visual style, Gondry's last release was Jack Black comedy Be Kind Rewind and he recently directed an episode of the second season of acclaimed HBO comedy Flight of the Conchords.

In what will be the most overtly commercial release of his career, the 46-year-old will shoot a script co-written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg and produced by Neal Moritz.
