Former R.E.M. star Michael Stipe is convinced the band "wouldn't have lasted five seconds" if they tried to find fame through a music reality show.

The Everybody Hurts hitmaker is adamant his "odd" voice and imperfect pitch would have let the group down if they had tried to launch their music careers through a television talent search like The X Factor or The Voice.

He tells Britain's The Sun newspaper, "If you look at Tv shows like The Voice, I wouldn't have lasted five seconds. I don't have perfect pitch. My voice is too odd to have been appreciated in that context. I'm not sure we would have made it to our third album."

The rockers, who split in 2011, released 15 studio albums in their 31 years as a band.
