Swimmer Michael Phelps has apologised to his fans, friends and family members following his latest Dui arrest in Maryland.

The retired Olympian was pulled over for speeding in Baltimore early on Tuesday morning (30Sep14) and failed a field sobriety test.

He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, excessive speeding and crossing double lanes.

Hours later, Phelps released a statement via Twitter.com, taking full responsibility for his actions and disappointing fans and loved ones. It reads: "I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down."
