The movie, starring Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo, picked up top prizes from the Los Angeles Film Critics, Boston Society of Film Critics and New York Film Critics Online over the weekend (06Dec15), and now the U.S. capital's film experts have given the project a big thumbs up.

They have named it Best Film, while Keaton, Ruffalo, Rachel MCAdams, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery and Stanley Tucci have picked up the Best Ensemble honour in Washington.

Mad Max: Fury Road, which also picked up a clutch of notable U.S. film awards over the weekend, was a big winner in Washington too, picking up Best Director honours for George Miller, Best Production Design and Best Editing.

The Revenant's Leonardo DiCaprio was named Best Actor, while Saoirse Ronan picked up Best Actress for her role as a young Irish woman immigrating to the United States in the 1950s in Brooklyn.

Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation) and Alicia Vikander (Ex MAChina) claimed the Best Supporting nods, while other winners included Inside Out (Best Animated Feature), Amy (Best Documentary) and Hungarian Holocaust drama Son of Saul (Best Foreign Language Film).
