Michael Jackson's defence team are fighting to reduce his $3 million (GBP1.67 million) bail
The superstar's lawyers today (28MAY04) contested in court claims by the prosecution that Jackson - who faces multiple counts of child molestation - may flee bail, insisting the $3 million is "excessive" and "violates" Santa Barbara County standards for bail on child molestation and conspiracy charges.
A defence filing states, "Three million dollars has no basis in logic, fact, or law, and the prosecution does not even begin to establish a basis for such bail."
Meanwhile, defence attorney THOMAS MESEREAU JR has hinted in a court filing that the case is unlikely to reach trial this year, unless the prosecution immediately starts complying with discovery orders.
Jackson, 45, has pleaded not guilty to committing a lewd act upon a child, administering an intoxicating agent and conspiracy to commit child abduction, false imprisonment and extortion.28/05/2004 18:00
