Michael Jackson will stand trial on child molestation charges on 13 September (04), a California judge has decided.

Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville today (28MAY04) set a provisional date for the trial - but said the date could be moved if lawyers provided him with a good reason for delay.

Melville said he would rule later on a request by the defence team to reduce Jackson's $3 million (GBP1.67 million) bail, which is being opposed by prosecutors who claim he may flee if faced with a prison sentence.

Jackson's lawyers contest the bail amount is excessive and claim he should get the same bail as anyone else in his situation.

The singer will stand trial, indicted on charges of lewd acts upon a child, administering an intoxicating agent and conspiracy to commit child abduction, false imprisonment and extortion. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
