Michael Hutchence's brother has defended his decision to sell a number of the deceased singer's personal items, including a fax to Kylie Minogue.

Rhett Hutchence decided to sell the "unimportant" items on the internet auction site eBay, but maintains that he is not trying to cash in on the former Inxs singer's death.

Included in the sale was a fax from Hutchence to his then girlfriend Kylie, which read: "To Kylie Minogue. Good morning. Days to go til !!"

Their mother, Patricia Glassop has expressed her dismay at the sale, saying: "Rhett's gone too far this time. After this I don't know who he is. But I do know he's not my son any more."

Speaking in his defence, Rhett told Australia's Daily Telegraph that "Michael wouldn't have minded at all" as the sale was in the name of love he needed the money to be able to join his girlfriend Lissette in the Netherlands.

"[Michael would] be happy I'm in love and have some direction in my life," he said.

"I assure you all the really important things I'm keeping. I will be passing on a lot of these things to [Michael's daughter] Tiger when she's old enough.

"There's nothing untoward about this, as far as I can see it's just a piece of paper that Michael has written on, proclaiming his love for Kylie - I don't see a problem with that."

Kylie and Hutchence dated 17 years ago and he wrote the song Suicide Blonde for her. Hutchence died after hanging himself in 1997 in an apparent suicide bid.
