British actor SIR Michael Caine tried to seduce SHIRLEY ANNE FIELD on the set of the original Alfie movie.

Field, who played one of Alfie's many lovers in the 1966 film, claims the actor was remarkably similar to the fictional lothario - and so arrogant he was convinced only his rival TERRENCE STAMP had a greater allure with women.

She says, "He said something to me along the lines of: 'Do you fancy me, then?' So I said: 'I would rather have you as a friend.'

"To which he replied: 'You must fancy Terence Stamp then, cos between us we've got the whole of London covered.'

"I thought: 'You arrogant so-and-so.'"
