Mia could get fined hundreds of thousands of dollars as a result of her middle-finger gesture during the Super Bowl half-time entertainment on Sunday night (February 5, 2012). The insulting 'salute' came during Madonna's performance of her new single 'Give Me All Your Luvin' which features Mia and Nicki Minaj. The Guardian reports that this year's Super Bowl, including Madonna's big-budget performance was "the most watched programme in US television history."
Tmz have spoken to sources close to those involved in the legal proceedings and it would appear that the issue has become a wrangle between Nfl and NBC; neither of whom seem willing to accept liability for the rapper's actions. According to Tmz's report, although Mia signed a contract with Nfl, who are responsible for booking the entertainment, "Mia agreed to indemnify the Nfl for any money it might be forced to pay" should anything like this happen. There have been occasions in the past - such as Janet Jackson's breast-baring incident - that have landed the organisation in trouble so they appear to have got wise to the problem now. The Fcc is the organisation responsible for monitoring broadcasting standards in the Usa and all parties are awaiting a response from them.
The Guardian suggests that Nfl have also washed their hands of the problem, saying "There was a failure in Nbc's delay system. The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize."
