Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was confused when he heard his band was set to be the subject of the next MTVICON concert - because he felt far too young for the honour.

The rocker, along with James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Jason Newsted, will have youngsters such as Avril Lavigne, Korn and SUM 41 pay their respects in performances for the TV special next week (ends09MAY03).

But Ulrich admits he didn't quite know how to feel when he heard he and his bandmates would receive the honour.

He says, "My first reaction was, 'Don't you have to be older?' The first digit is my age is still a three!"

Still, he's aware of the band's influence.

He adds, "When a 16-year-old kid who has cancer says Metallica keeps him alive, that's all you need to hear."

Previous honourees are Janet Jackson and Aerosmith.
