Heavy rockers Metallica made a surprise appearance at Britain's DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL yesterday (31MAY03) - even though organisers recently quashed reports they were scheduled to perform at the event.

The NOTHING ELSE MATTERS outfit were not part of the published bill, but appeared on the smaller second stage, to the astonishment of thousands of lucky festival-goers.

Just 8,000 of the 40,000 people at the festival were able to see the show by the band, with many more queuing to catch a glimpse of their heroes.

The event had been hit by the withdrawal of Limp Bizkit last month (MAY03), and organisers had denied reports Metallica were appearing because of contractual reasons.
