Video obtained by TMZ.com showed James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo with a speaker in a shopping trolley blaring out their 1991 hit, leading delighted deli counter staff in an impromptu sing-a-long.
According to editors at the U.S. gossip site the bizarre supermarket visit was being filmed for an episode of funnyman Billy Eichner's Funny or Die TV series Billy on the Street.
The show, which appears on America's TruTV network, usually sees the comedian tackle unsuspecting members of the public with trivia questions.
Eichner was also seen in the clip, holding a microphone while a starstruck man working on the deli counter led the band in their rendition of the song.
