The Sophie's Choice star attended a glitzy event at the Cipriani Wall Street venue in the Big Apple last week (ends22Nov15) to raise funds for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, the charity set up by the late Superman legend and his wife.

During the gala, Meryl took to the podium to make a speech remembering the actor, who died in 2004 at the age of 52 a decade after he was left paralysed following a 1995 horse riding accident.

The actress broke down in tears as she remembered Christopher and his wife Dana, who died in 2006, two years after her husband, following a battle with cancer.

"Their love is the inspiration for me to continue my dedication to this cause. I will never forget the energy that love gave off," Meryl declared.

She also recalled a sweet story about a sports game involving her son Henry and Reeve's boy Matthew: "My son Henry, who is Matthew Reeve's age exactly, was six... He complained in the car afterward (after the game), 'Mom, it wasn't fair... That little boy had 'Superman' on his team."
