Actor-turned-director Mel Gibson was presented with the Best Action Movie award on the blue carpet, moments before the main ceremony got underway at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.

Once inside, Moonlight claimed the first big title of the evening, scoring Best Acting Ensemble, while Manchester by the Sea's Lucas Hedges was named Best Young Actor/Actress.

In the TV categories, Sterling K. Brown's performance in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story won him the Best Supporting Actor in a Movie Made for Television or Limited Series, Jane Krakowski landed Best Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Louie Anderson took home the Best Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series for his gender-bending role as Zach Galifianakis' onscreen mum in Baskets.

The ceremony, organised by members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association, is being hosted by comedy actor T.J. Miller.

La La Land led all movie nominees heading into the show, while The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story was up for a total of six categories for the TV portion of the awards.
