The Lethal Weapon star graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Kensington, New South Wales in 1977, and he went back there on Sunday (06Dec15) to launch a new facility.

He joined the country's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and actress Teresa Palmer to cut the ribbon on the new building which will house the institution's masters program.

Mel, who has made sizeable contributions to the school over the years, viewed work by the students and unveiled a plaque.

After the event, Teresa shared a picture of herself posing with Mel, and added in a caption on Instagram.com, "Thanks Mel Gibson and NIDA for inviting me to attend the new Graduate School Opening. I was happy to support my director and friend as he spoke of his (hilarious!) memories attending NIDA a few moons back!"

Other graduates from NIDA include Cate Blanchett, Sam Worthington, Hugo Weaving and Toni Collette.
