The World War II movie, starring Andrew Garfield as real-life American conscientious objector Desmond Doss, has landed nominations for Best Film, Best Director for Mel, Best Original Screenplay and in all of the four acting categories for Andrew and co-stars Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving and Rachel Griffiths.

The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) also shortlisted the film in a number of technical categories such as cinematography, production and costume design.

Pregnant actress Teresa told the Sydney Morning Herald she couldn't believe she was nominated for what is considered the Australian Oscars for her role as Andrew's character's wife in the Australian-American production, which was largely filmed in New South Wales.

"It was surreal," she said. "I was in the car and my husband pulled to the side of the road. He was so excited."

Hacksaw Ridge, set during the Battle of Okinawa, will compete against The Daughter, Goldstone, Tanna and Girl Asleep for the Best Film prize. Meanwhile, Andrew will go head-to-head with Pawno stars John Brumpton and Damian Hill and The Daughter's Ewen Leslie for the lead actor award for his portrayal of Doss, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for saving 75 people even though he refused to use a weapon or kill an enemy.

The film has been receiving Oscars buzz since its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September (16), when it received a ten-minute standing ovation. It is due to hit cinemas in November (16).

The AACTA ceremony takes place in Sydney on 7 December (16) and also honours talent in TV, documentary and short film. In the TV categories, notable nominees including The Night Manager star Elizabeth Debicki, who is up for lead actress in a TV drama for The Kettering Incident, against The Dressmaker actress Sarah Snook for The Beautiful Lie.
