Mel Gibson's controversial movie The Passion Of The Christ actually earned $7.7 million (GBP4 million) more on its opening weekend than was previously reported.

It was initially estimated that the film, which follows the last 12 hours of Jesus Christ's life, had raked in an impressive $76.2 million (GBP40.1 million) from Friday to Sunday (27-29FEB04) after its release on Wednesday (25FEB04).

But new figures released by distributor NEWMARKET FILMS show the film actually made $83.8 million (GBP44.1 million) during that period, boosting its five-day total to $125.1 million (GBP65.8 million).

The movie was at the centre of much controversy - even before its release - when it was hit with accusations of potentially igniting anti-Semitism.
