The former Spice Girls singer and her husband Stephen Belafonte are good friends with the newly-engaged couple - who have four-month-old daughter North together - and she believes the pair have found lasting happiness with one another.
She said: ''We've had dinner with them in Paris, they're solid and madly in love and they know and like each other, so they'll be together for a very, very long time. If their relationship was messed up I'd say 'Oh my God, they're doomed', but it's not.''
And, like her own relationship with Stephen, Mel - who raises four daughters with her spouse - believes the key to Kim and Kanye's union is they were friends for so long before they got together romantically.
She told radio show 'The Morning Zoo': ''They have a similar relationship to me and my husband, they've known each other for a very long time and I think when you've known someone as a friend, you have a good foundation for a relationship.''
The '12 Years A Slave' director will receive the accolade at the London Film Festival in October.
Critics from all over the world were asked to name the best movie of the past 16 years.
