Matt Reeves will direct 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes'.

The 'Cloverfield' helmer has been announced to take the reins of the forthcoming sequel to 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes'.

Rupert Wyatt - who directed the 2011 film - had been due to return to work with Fox and producers at Chernin Entertainment again.

However, he exited the venture last month amid speculation he was unhappy with the projected release date of May 2014.

A series of meetings with several directors took place before Matt was finally chosen.

The first film starred James Franco, John Lithgow and Andy Serkis as Caesar the ape and it's ending set audiences up perfectly for the sequel.

'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' has been written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.

Rupert established himself as one of Hollywood's hottest new filmmakers last year - with 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' only being his second film and reaching $481 million at the box office.

His debut movie came in 2008 with drama-thriller 'The Escapist', which stars Dominic Cooper and Joseph Fiennes.
