The comic play, written by playwright Scott MCPherson, is set to begin previews at New York's American Airlines Theatre next June (17), with its limited engagement ending in August (17).

The show first debuted at Off-Broadway theater Playwrights Horizons in 1991, earning MCPherson the honour of best play at both the Drama Desk Awards and Outer Critics Circle Awards.

It was later adapted for the big screen in the 1996 film starring Streep, Leonardo Dicaprio and Diane Keaton, who earned an Oscar nomination for her performance.

The story centres on two estranged sisters who reunite after 18 years after one is diagnoised with leukaemia.
